Broadband tariffs reduced by MTNL

Independence Day this year became a little sweeter to users of MTNL Triband in Mumbai who are on unlimited broadband plans. The government-owned PSU announced a reduction of tariffs on home
unlimited broadband plans. It has doubled the speed for current users of such plans, which is expected to take effect automatically from the first of September 2009.

This may not be directly related to the recent lowering of rates on home unlimited DSL broadband plans by Airtel, but MTNL's new rates are very competitive with those offered by Airtel. MTNL operates in Mumbai
and Delhi, with these changes having been noted in Mumbai, but nothing in Delhi so far.

MTNL customers who wish to retain their current speeds beyond the end of August (to save on the bill), would have to call them up on the number 1504, and request the same. Prospective customers can expect
deposit, registration, and modem rental charges to be waived. The new plans with their respective speed and monthly plan charge are as listed below:

Upto 512 Kbps: Rs 999
Upto 1 Mbps: Rs 1,599
Upto 2 Mbps: Rs 3,999
Upto 4 Mbps: Rs 9,999
